WE RECOMMEND LAYING FLAGSTONES IN A MORTAR BASE WHEREVER POSSIBLE
where height restrictions necessitate the use of tile glue please consult manufacturers specifications.
Experience has shown flexible tile glues to be superior. Inflexible tile glues have in some instances caused cracking
Please note that in the handling & laying process, the 30mm flagstones are less impact resistant than the 50mm flagstones but once laid correctly become one with the mortar base. We do not accept liability for damaged caused by movement in the slab.
MINIMUM RECOMMENDED FOUNDATIONS
Foot traffic areas: 75mm compacted washed concrete sand base with a 10mm loose top coat to bed the flagstones in.
Vehicle traffic areas: If using our 50mm flagstone, lay on a 75mm - 100mm reinforced concrete base. or our 65mm flagstone can be laid on a well compacted sand base ensure flagstones are bedded in well.
RECOMMENDED LAYING METHOD
Use a 5:1 ratio washed concrete sand and cement mix (Brighton lite preferred) slightly wetter than a bricklayers mix 15mm - 20mm thick, bed the flagstone properly with a minimum grout joint of 8mm - 10mm. We recommend that the flagstone be thoroughly watered before placing to maximize adhering qualities.
ALWAYS ENSURE flagstones ARE BEDDED IN WELL.
Flagstones should be kept as clean as possible whilst laying, cement or mortar spilled on the flagstone should be sponged off immediately to avoid staining. RECOMMENDED GROUTING METHOD
Wet mix 6 Parts White Bush Sand
6 Parts Sydney Sand
2 Parts White Cement (for white ) /Off White Cement (for yellow )
1 Part Lime (to prevent shrinkage.)
1 Cap Ochre/Yellow Oxide (pressure pack can lid ) ( for yellow ONLY )
Colour oxides are optional either to blend or contrast with colour of flagstones.
THOROUGHLY WET flagstone BEFORE GROUTING Make the mix to a fairly stiff consistency and trowel into joints. Using a clean sponge and water, sponge paving clean as young
We do not recommend using sealers on the flagstone outdoors as it is not necessary & past experience has shown us that the sealers themselves breakdown in the elements and become stained. However we do recommend sealing the flagstone when using indoors to make cleaning easier. When sealers are required it comes down to personal taste, all different type of sealers have different effects on the flagstones, Spirit based sealers change the colour and tend to make them darker, most water based sealers allow them to stay the same. Waxing of flagstones creates different effects. In each case the sealer is more to prevent staining rather than making them waterproof.
If staining occurs most stubborn stains can be removed using domestos neat (grease, wine, moss & Leaf stains etc ) any other stains please call and we will advise what can be used No express or implied guarantees or warranties are given.
